Window of Opportunity for Dairy Ireland
The Irish Farmers Journal invited us to write a commentary on the evolution of Irish dairy cooperatives: the way we look at it. I’ve followed the irish dairy cooperatives since about 1995. I included Glanbia as one of my case studies in my PhD (2001). They’ve been in my European dairy ranking since 1998. Of course their stock listings make them interesting cases to look at. But even at non-listed cooperatives, such as Dairygold, there’s been a lot happening in recent years. Good and perhaps not-so-good - from my perspective. The nice thing of following cooperatives for a prolonged period of time is that wisdom emerges gradually. The true effects of decisions become visible only after sufficient time has elapsed. The attached article reflects my current thinking on the Irish dairy cooperatives. I’m interested to learn from YOUR views. So I’d be happy if you were to drop me a line after your reading of the text: vanbekkum@coopchampions.com.
